Professor John Robinson ('William Hurt' ) together with his wife Maureen, his family and fighter pilot Don West (lead a desperate attempt to create a Hyper-Gate in orbit around the planet Alpha Prime to enable the rescue of Earth to begin. However, others have different reasons for reaching Alpha Prime and Dr. Smith sabotages the Jupiter 2 but fails to get clear and becomes an unwelcome stowaway aboard the ship. To escape the gravitational pull of the sun the Hyper-Drive is fired and the Jupiter 2, after a trip through hyperspace, emerges into a completely unknown part of the galaxy. A search of the star charts reveals that they are completely lost in an uncharted sector of space but this is only the beginning of their problems…
The year is 2058. Most of the Earth's natural resources are virtually exhausted and will no longer support human life. The government decides that another planet shall be the human race's new home and the government begins construction of two "Hypergates" that will allow the human race to travel across space to the distant planet Alpha Prime. Government scientist Professor John Robinson, decides to set up a vital space mission. Along with his family: His wife Maureen, their children, oldest daughter, medical officer Judy, troubled teenage daughter, video technician Penny and their youngest son, gifted robotics expert Will and joined by heroic military fighter pilot Major Don West, John and his crew travels to Alpha Prime on-board the spaceship "Jupiter 2". But the traitorous Dr. Zachary Smith, working for terrorists knownthe Seditions, uses the ship's robot and sabotages the mission and sends "Jupiter 2" off-course. ButJupiter 2 is caught in the gravitational pull of the sun, John uses the ship's hyper-drive to escape. But John, his family and Major West learns that they've entered a uncharted part of the galaxy and they are lost in space.
I am the ambiguous owner of a DVD copy of Lost in Space.<br/><br/>Something I realizedI watched the film a couple times was that the holes in the plot were less than deliberate. The DVD version has some unseen footage, where Penny and the girls enter the time bubble and discover a much older Blaarp (that chromakey monkey thing). It makes you wonder if the film was rushed into the theaters, before obvious plot holes could be fixed. Another incongruity in the film is when the Proteus materializes near the strange planet. The crew doesn't mention thatthey enter the range of the Proteus they enter a time distortion. When Professor Robinson chastises Will Robinson about the natural vs. artificial causes of the time bubble Will seems to overreact a bit too much, leading to the older Will being very obsessive about this time machine contraption in the destructed alternative future Jupiter 2. This seems to be the point in the film where the writers said "if we don't do something blatant the film will go on for 4 hours." I did enjoy the film, however, when I realized that this brand of science fiction is for pure visual enjoyment, not serious analyzing. If there ever is a sequel, however, you might have a hard time convincing Gary Oldman and the rest to do it, for each of them (penny and will excluded) were too serious for the roles they played. Overall, this film was great eye candy and much better than the TV series.
I found Lost in Space a fun movie from start to finish with a superb cast and a fascinating retelling of how the Robinson family were launched into deep space and the events leading up to them becoming lost in space. I would also like to point out that I was pleasantly surprised with the special effects in this timeless masterpiece based on the original idea by Irwin Allen. My only criticisms are: 1. The idea that the story was only supposed to be sixty years in our future, because in reality it should have been more like one hundred and sixty years in the future. 2. I think it would have worked better to see Billy Mumy who was the original Will Robinson, play the adult Will's role in the film. I am sure I don't stand alone with this comment among the serious fans of the original Lost in Space show of the 1960s. With that aside the movie from start to finish was great to see especially with the cameo appearances by June Lockhart, Mark Goddard, Marta Kristen and Angela Cartwright, all and all a must.
Though there's an obvious, admirable effort to supply character development and plot twists, the set-work and special effects - both stylish and stunning - tend to dominate.
SImple answer - it's not Matt Le Blanc under the helmet. Because the actor was also busy filming the TV series "Friends" at the same timemaking this movie, a double was used for this sequence to allow for some flexibility in the actor's schedule.<br/><br/>Also, because he's a military officer, his helmet is more advanced and protective than the ones used by the Robinsons.
